Celebrate Native American Heritage Month These Four Ways at Wonders of Wildlife

Published October 25, 2024

This November, Wonders of Wildlife is sharing the rich history, traditions, and contributions of Native American cultures in honor of Native American Heritage Month. In partnership with the American Indian Center of Springfield, we are offering a variety of activities for all ages to learn more about our country’s native people.

To see all the events happening this month, be sure to visit wondersofwildlife.org/heritage.

Take a Guided Nature Crafting Class

Learn how to make a dreamcatcher or drum from an expert guide from the AICS! As you design, our guide will teach you the significance of your piece – its history, its purpose, and its symbolism in Native American culture.

Sign Your Child Up for an Education Class or Camp

Let your child go back in time to learn about bison – an animal Native Americans relied on to provide food, clothing, shelter, and tools for their entire tribe. Each class will let your student participate in hands-on activities and learn more about our national mammal.

Our Schools Out Day Camp also offers a unique way for your child to learn about the culture of our region’s indigenous peoples. Students will be able to explore the folklore, art, survival skills, and much more of those who lived here before them.

Explore the Wildlife Galleries

Start at the beginning of our nation’s history by exploring artifacts from our country’s first conservationists. With admission to Wonders of Wildlife, you can explore the Wildlife Galleries, which begins with the powerful Buffalo Run exhibit.

Once you enter Native American Hall, see clothing, tools, ceremonial pieces, photos, and more that show what life was like for indigenous people across America.

Listen to A Historical Presentation

Did you know Native Americans played a key part in the military during both World Wars? Join us and Dr. William Meadows from Missouri State University as he dives more into how tribal practices were applied during their time with the armed forces.
