As an aquatic holding intern, you will assist in the care of a wide variety of aquatic animals who may be housed at "aquatic holding" (sometimes referred to as our 'animal hospital'). Aquatic holding allows for additional observation, medical care, or a place to quarantine new animals. Interns on this team will gain a diverse knowledge of quarantine methods, biosecurity protocols, and safety procedures for feedings and water quality adjustments.

As an intern on the jellyfish and live food organism team, you will learn about jellyfish biology, development, and captive care. You will develop aquarium and aquaculture skills and become familiar with the inner workings of public aquariums.

While interning with the Natives and Amazon team, you will work with a diverse range of freshwater fish such as sturgeon, alligator gar, giant amazon arapaima, freshwater stingrays, giant catfish, or coastal invertebrates such as horseshoe crabs, southern spider crabs, and left-handed whelks. Volunteers will gain a vast knowledge of fish identification, aquatic exhibit basics, an understanding of our life support systems, and animal training for feeding and procedures.

While interning on the “Marvels” team, you will assist in caring for large predatory sharks, stingrays, our giant pacific octopus, spider crabs, seahorses, and live corals. Several valuable hands-on skills will be taught including water quality, fish identification, disease management, animal nutrition, and live food preparation.

While interning with the BMW team (Birds, Mammals, Reptiles), you will assist in the care of river otters, alligators, hellbenders, owls, snakes, beavers, salamanders, bats, turtles, and other animals too. The typical BMW team member’s day consists of cleaning, managing biosolids, and preventing chemical odors. There may be times when an intern assists the BMW team with animal training, observation of veterinarian procedures, and interacting with guests.

Ambassador animals often travel off-site for educational programs or special events. While interning with the Ambassador Animal team, you may be trained and may interact with snakes, turtles, lizards, amphibians, various mammals and birds. The typical AAT team member’s day consists of a lot of cleaning, exposure to the elements, exhibit maintenance, training animals and interacting with education staff and volunteers. The Ambassador Animal Team is primarily based at off-site facility.
