Out to Sea

About the Exhibit

Welcome to the breathtaking shores of the Bimini Islands! Just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, this enchanting island chain is steeped in history, mystery, and vibrant marine life. Whether you’re drawn to its legendary past, its famous visitors, or its diverse wildlife, Bimini offers an unforgettable adventure both on land and beneath the waves. Our Out to Sea exhibit embodies the true feeling of coastal habitats and wildlife.

Legends and Mysteries of Bimini

Bimini is more than just a tropical paradise — it’s a place of myth and wonder. One of its most intriguing features is a freshwater spring hidden within a saltwater swamp, rumored to be the Fountain of Youth. Could this be the very spring that inspired explorers searching for eternal youth?

Another fascinating mystery is the Bimini Road, a formation of square stone blocks stretching 1,500 feet across the ocean floor. Some believe this submerged structure is the gateway to the lost city of Atlantis, fueling speculation and wonder among divers and researchers alike.

A Retreat for Famous Figures

Bimini has long been a retreat for influential figures seeking inspiration and adventure. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr visited the islands, finding peace and reflection in their tranquil surroundings. While staying here, he composed parts of his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, a testament to the island’s power to inspire great minds. Today, two bronze busts stand in his honor on the island, a reminder of his enduring legacy.

Bonefish Willie, a renowned fishing guide and personal friend of Johnny Morris, also called the island of Bimini home. He is the one who first triggered Johnny Morris’ admiration of Ernest Hemingway and his great literary works. Ernest Hemingway also had a deep connection with Bimini, referring to it as his summer home. An avid fisherman, he spent countless hours battling monster game fish in these waters. Modern-day anglers still follow in his footsteps, setting sail from Florida to test their skills against the legendary catches of Bimini.
