About the Exhibit
As you enter Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, you'll be welcomed by the magnificent Great Oceans Hall. This extraordinary exhibit promises to captivate and inspire by transporting the wonders of the ocean right to the heart of America. In the grand lobby of Great Oceans Hall, guests are treated to a mesmerizing display of replicas of larger fish and marine mammals, including the majestic orca, swimming above them. These awe-inspiring replicas are featured to highlight the incredible diversity and grandeur of marine life, offering visitors a glimpse into the vast and mysterious world beneath the ocean's surface.

The orca, commonly known as the "killer whale," embodies the ocean's power and strength, captivating audiences with its precise and formidable hunting techniques. By showcasing examples of these splendid creatures, Wonders of Wildlife aims to educate and inspire guests about the importance of marine conservation and the need to protect these incredible species and their habitats. The immersive experience of observing these life-sized replicas overhead fosters a sense of wonder and connection to the ocean, with the hope of inspiring the next generation to make a positive impact on wildlife and the great outdoors.
Also, within Great Oceans Hall, guests will notice two historical vessels on display. On the right side of Great Oceans Hall, you will find “The Avalon,” a white and green boat that belonged to Zane Grey, a renowned western writer and pioneering angler known as the “Father of Modern Big Game Fishing.” Grey once held over a dozen saltwater records, some of which still stand today. He was also the first to catch a 1,000-pound marlin with a rod and reel.

Additionally, the sister ship of Ernest Hemingway's cherished boat, the "Pilar," is on display here. After fishing aboard this very boat, Hemingway decided he must own one just like it. Hemingway named his boat the "Pilar" after his wife, Pauline, and frequently used it for marlin fishing. These experiences on the "Pilar" served as inspiration for his renowned book, "The Old Man and the Sea."
Both Grey and Hemingway continue to inspire current and future generations with their profound connections to the great oceans. Their adventures and literary contributions have left an indelible mark on our understanding and appreciation of marine life. Grey's vivid descriptions of deep-sea fishing and Hemingway's tales from his time on his beloved boat have captivated readers and ignited a passion for ocean exploration and conservation. By sharing their experiences and love for the sea, they have encouraged countless individuals to cherish and protect the vast and mysterious world beneath the waves. Their legacies serve as a reminder of our oceans' beauty and importance, inspiring us all to act in preserving these vital ecosystems for generations to come.
