Celebrating the Life of Sampson
Published February 23, 2026
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Sampson, our beloved Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) and one of the most iconic residents here at Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium.
Journey From the Atlantic
Sampson was one of four goliath groupers sustainably collected from the wild off the coast of Stuart, Florida on July 4, 2017. The collection of Sampson was conducted with permission from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for conservation and educational purposes.
At the time of collection, Sampson was already an adult, estimated to weigh about 250 pounds. While his exact age is unknown, his impressive size and presence were evident from the start.
Following collection, Sampson and the other groupers were temporarily housed in Marathon, Florida. They were later transported by ground to Springfield, Missouri, where they underwent approximately 30 days of quarantine under the supervision of the Bass Pro Shops Live Exhibits team.
After completing quarantine, Sampson arrived at his permanent home at Wonders of Wildlife. He first lived in the Open Ocean exhibit for about three and a half years before moving to the Shipwreck Reef exhibit in April 2022 until his passing in February 2026. Throughout his time at the aquarium, he was cared for by a dedicated team of aquatics professionals who ensured his health and well-being.
Present during the original collection event were Mike Daniel, current director of animal care at Wonders of Wildlife, professional fisherman Bill Dance, and noted conservationist and Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris. Our team, led by Mike Daniel, assisted with the post-catch animal health and helped ensure Sampson’s safe transition into professional care at WOW.

An Iconic Ambassador
Sampson became an extraordinary ambassador for his species over the years. As a star of the Ray Touch Cylinder exhibit in the Shipwreck Gallery, he inspired curiosity, awe, and respect in thousands of guests. His immense size and calm presence created unforgettable moments for visitors of all ages.
Through Sampson, guests learned more about Atlantic goliath groupers and the importance of protecting vulnerable aquatic species. He helped spark meaningful conversations about marine conservation and the responsibility we all share in safeguarding our waters.
Sampson’s presence brought joy and wonder to guests and staff alike. He served as a powerful reminder of the beauty and diversity found beneath the surface.
Sampson, thank you for the excitement, education, and inspiration you shared with so many. You will be greatly missed!
