I Wonder…Why are Animal Ambassadors so Important to Conservation Efforts?

You may think you know what the screech of a bald eagle sounds like from the movies — loud, mighty, patriotic. But did you know that infamous call is actually that of a red-tailed hawk? This same hawk can be seen around our properties as one of our animal ambassadors! Our ambassador program is home to many diverse and captivating birds like our exotic blue and gold macaw, Kiwi, or Oliver, our Swainson’s hawk!

Our ambassador program is a cornerstone of our conservation education efforts. These birds, all of which are non-releasable due to either injury or imprinting, serve as living representatives of their species. Through up-close encounters and educational presentations, they help us share a powerful message about wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and the positive impact that these birds have on our ecosystems.

Currently, our program is home to over a dozen birds representing a variety of species, from striking hawks to tiny screech owls. Each bird plays a unique role in helping us connect with the public and inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world during on-site presentations, outreach events, and school programs, reaching thousands of people each year. Through personal connections at events like these, our birds inspire curiosity, awareness, and action in conservation.

Behind the scenes, our dedicated team provides enrichment, training, and medical care tailored to each animal. Our staff builds strong, trusting relationships with each bird, allowing them to thrive in human care. Every interaction is guided by respect, patience, and a deep understanding of avian behavior. Their constant use of positive reinforcement training not only encourages the birds’ participation in programs but also ensures their physical and mental well-being.

Meet some of the incredible birds who help bring our conservation message to life! Each of these ambassadors has a unique story and personality, and they serve an essential purpose in inspiring people to connect with the outdoors!

Kiwi: Blue and Gold Macaw

Acquisition Date: 2018

Kiwi is a lively and intelligent macaw who loves attention, dancing, and playing basketball, often greeting visitors with a loud call or a “high four.” If you’ve already met Kiwi, you may have noticed his featherless legs. This is due to injuries he sustained before he came to WOW. Since his arrival, our team has been working diligently to provide care and supplements to help feather growth!

Capella: Bald Eagle

Acquisition Date: 2002

Capella, a 39-year-old retired ambassador, now enjoys a peaceful life with baths and misting sessions. While she is no longer on display at WOW — where she welcomed millions of guests — she continues to teach our team crucial info about her species even in her old age. Her longevity reflects the success of conservation efforts that helped bring bald eagles back from the brink of extinction.

Rojito: Red-Tailed Hawk

Acquisition Date: 2019

Rojito is a curious and clever hawk who loves enrichment activities! While he hasn’t been out on programs quite yet, Rojito has been making steady progress when it comes to getting ready for presentations! He’s currently working on voluntarily crating and scaling, showing great promise as an ambassador for his species!

Alice: Turkey Vulture

Acquisition Date: 2016

Alice is a bold and inquisitive vulture who captivates audiences with her natural behavior and love for enrichment. Though she can’t fly due to a past injury, she has proved indispensable when it comes to educating about vultures’ ecological impact. Turkey vultures provide an essential service to ecosystems by cleaning up carrion, which helps prevent the spread of disease and supports environmental health.
